Brookwood Golf Team Results Cundiff leads the way with an 88

Cundiff leads the way with an 88 to claim Region 8 crown

SNELLVILLE - Erin Cundiff and the Brookwood girls golf team had enough of waiting their turn in the Region 8-AAAAA pecking order.

Thursday afternoon at the region tournament at Summit Chase Country Club, they did something about it.

Cundiff shot 88 to earn low medalist honors and lead the Broncos to the team title with a score of 193, outdistancing runner-up Grayson, Parkview and the rest of the seven-team field.

Having finished second to the Panthers three of the last four seasons, it was a particularly sweet victory for Brookwood.

With Cundiff, the team's only returning player form last year, leading the way, the Broncos posted all four of their scores among the top 10 individuals, including Hannah Brock's fifth-place total of 105.

"Our second, third and fourth players for us, this is their first year playing varsity golf," Brookwood coach Steve Thompson said of his team, which also included Morgan Beyers (107) and Morgan Bell (108). "So, for them to do what they did is phenomenal.

"But Erin's been the rock. We can always count on her. No matter what's going to happen, we know she's going to come out and put up a number."

Cundiff certainly put up a number one day short of her 17th birthday with her 88, a five-stroke improvement over her third-place score from a year ago and eight strokes better than runner-up Ali Crook of Parkview, despite a steady breeze.

However, she said recent rains had made course conditions ideal.

"It was perfect," the junior said. "I knew anything could happen, but I really just gave it my all.

"I'm just so excited (about winning the individual and team titles). It was an unbelievable round. I couldn't have asked for a better day."

As big a day as Thursday was for Cundiff and Brookwood, it was also historic for Grayson, which secured its first trip to the Class AAAAA state tournament alongside the Broncos on May 4 at Jekyll Island.

Led by Morganne Gregory's third-place finish at 99 and Tori Van Ryen's fourth-place score of 100, the Rams finished as team runner-up, just six strokes off the pace and the only other team besides the champions to break 200 on the day.

"It's great for women's athletics at Grayson," Rams coach Lenny Gregory said. "It shows how much we've progressed as a school and as a program."

Led by a 96 from Crook, Parkview finished third at 206, while Dacula (216), South Gwinnett (235), Central Gwinnett (269) and Shiloh (285) rounded out the team standings.
